2011 Sunset to Sunrise Relay Rules
These rules are here to ensure every participant enjoys themselves on our course. It is our job to make sure we run a safe, fair, and fun event, and everyone’s adherence to these rules will do just that. Let’s keep it fun for everyone!

Rule infractions will result in time penalties against your team of 30 and 60 minutes depending on the severity of the infraction. Some rule violations will result in a disqualification.
30 Minute Violations
1. Obey any and all traffic laws. Drive within a reasonable distance to other runners, and respect the safety of all on the course. Team vehicles must drive ahead of their runners in order to meet at the exchange point, shadowing or tailing runners is prohibited.
2. At the exchanges, we ask that only the active van park while waiting for incoming runners. At the van exchanges, both team vans may wait, if there is adequate room at the exchange point. This means be prepared for more congestion around van exchange points, and use caution
3. All vans must display a “CAUTION: Runners on Road” sign on the rear of each vehicle throughout the entire race. Feel free to make your own signs just be sure they are legible and visible to all traffic. Race officials will be randomly checking to see that your team vehicles are displaying these signs.
4. Vehicles must stop and park only in designated areas. Volunteers will assist you with finding designated areas to park.
5. All runners need to wear their team numbers visibly in front at all times and carry the relay wristbands when running.
6. On Ultra Squads each runner must run a minimum of six legs of the race, unless a runner becomes ill or drops out of the race for any reason.
7. On Full Squads each runner must run a minimum of three legs of the race, unless a runner becomes ill or drops out of the race for any reason.
60 Minute Violations
1. From dusk until dawn runners must wear reflective vest and carry a flashlight. Runners may berequired to show proof of these items at the exchange points. Any team not carrying proper reflective attire and lights at the exchange points will be asked to wait at the exchange point until the items can be procured.
2. Exchange of wrist band must happen at the designated exchange area, unless running consecutive legs of the race.
3. Runners making a wrong turn must return to the point on the course where the wrong turn was made and then continue running. No cutting of the course is allowed.
4. Injured runners, who have had their place taken in the rotation on any leg may not run again in the race
5. Women must run a minimum of 12 legs on a mixed team or that team will be reclassified (Applies only to Full Squad teams running in the “Mixed” division)
Disqualification Violations:
1. All teams must fulfill the volunteer requirement, if your team does not, or your volunteer does notshow up for their assigned shift, your team will not be able to participate and will be disqualified unless prior arrangements have been made with the race directors.
2. All waivers must be submitted the Sunset to Sunrise Relay prior to the race in order to participate.
3. Minimum age for participation is 14 . A parent or guardian must also sign a waiver for participants between ages 14 and 18. Any team with a participant found to be under 14 years of age will be disqualified from the race.
4. Any runner on the course from dusk until dawn who is not wearing proper reflective attire and carrying a lighted flashlight (or head lamp) will cause their team to be disqualified from the race. We will have race officials on the course throughout the night checking for these safety items.
5. Properly dispose of trash and human waste. Any runner spotted littering, or urinating/defecating on private property, will cause their entire team to be immediately disqualified. We have a no tolerance policy regarding this, please remember we are guests in the areas we are running through, most of us would like to be invited back next year, if you cannot respect the cities, highways, neighborhoods, and trails we will be using we will not be seeing you at next year’s run.

6. Volunteers shall be treated as race officials at all times. Any disrespectful conduct towards volunteers will not be tolerated
7. Public nuisance, not obeying noise ordinance laws.
8. Bikes and team vehicles will be expected to yield to normal traffic along the route so as not to create an impediment to traffic flow.

9. Any team members caught tampering with race signs will cause their team to be disqualified from the race.
General Rules (No time penalties, just helps us all get along):
1. Obey all Florida pedestrian and vehicle codes.
2. Crossing roads and highways should only be done in a legal fashion, in crosswalks or intersection
3. Respect residential neighborhoods
4. Bicycles used to pace runners, or shadow runners at night, are doing so at their own risk. Please use the same caution on a bicycle as the runners on the roadways. Assume you never have the right of way.
